Gynecomastia or the development of abnormal or large breasts in males is an excess growth of the male’s breast tissue rather than the growth or accumulation of fatty tissues. Males are born with androgen and estrogen hormones. Some cases of Gynecomastia can develop in newborns as associated with galactorrhea (or hormones that cause milk production or flow) and usually only last for a couple of weeks. While other cases occur during male puberty occur as a result of marked changes in hormone levels.

Males are born with both androgen and estrogen hormones. Androgens help to create the male characteristics such as hair growth, deepness of voice and size of muscles, while estrogens are responsible for the creation of female characteristics. Changes in how the body responds to and produces these hormones can cause men to develop enlarged breasts or Gynecomastia. This enlarged growth can occur in one or both breasts usually beginning as a small noticeable lump underneath the nipple. This lump may be tender or sensitive to the touch and in some cases can become large or grow unevenly in both breasts.

Some other causes of male breast enlargement can include: hormone treatments for prostate cancer, cancer chemotherapies, exposure to estrogen hormones, testosterone deficiencies, medication side effects, marijuana usage, chronic liver disease, aging, radiation treatment of the testicles, genetic defects, overactive thyroid and tumors. In rare cases, breast cancer can cause enlargement of the breasts in men. These symptoms are marked by one sided breast growth, firm or hard lumps found in the breast area, an ulcerous patch of skin on the breast and/ or discharge coming from the nipple.

Testing should be completed to rule out certain diseases and diagnose cause for breast growth such as blood or hormone tests, liver and kidney tests, male mammograms or ultrasound of the breast issue. If an underlying condition is diagnosed effective hormonal treatments, or medication therapy can be started or adjusted. Generally treatment regiments are started if symptoms caused marked pain or tenderness or emotional disturbance.

Treatment regiments can also include breast reduction surgery as a viable option or a suction-assisted lumpectomy which removes the glandular tissue through a small incision. Surgeries are usually performed in cases where the breast have grown large, cause painful symptoms, or have been present with symptoms for more than six months. Mild cases require no therapy other than the prescribed treatments of the diagnosed underlying cause. Gynecomastia diagnosed during male puberty will not require treatment other being closely monitored and often goes away on its own.
